The EDP is an alternative to a high school diploma.  When learners come in, they are usually in the learning phase of the EDP.  To enter the taskbooks, or the assessment phase of the EDP, they must meet some requirements; they must make specific reading and math scores on CASAS tests and produce a writing sample that meets CASAS's requirements.  After a learner has met the reading, math, and writing requirements, a learner is paired with an assessor.  In this assessment phase, the assessor will assess the learner through a series of five taskbooks and spot checks that have the learner demonstrate 65 competencies.  The learner gets a taskbook, has a week to complete it, and returns a week later for their spot check.  In the spot check, the assessor has the learner demonstrate competencies by answering questions and completing worksheets.  Upon completing the spot check, the learner recieves a new taskbook.  The learner has a week to complete his taskbook and return for the next spot check.  This continues for five taskbooks.  Then, the learner goes through PTAs (Post Test Assessments) which are a second opportunity to demonstrate anything the learner did not demonstrate the first time.  Once the learner has successfully demonstrated all 65 competencies and completed the individualized assessment, the learner has completed the EDP and will receive a transcript and diploma.
